I think these would make for a great heirloom ornament. I'd take it a step further by saving a piece of each fresh Christmas tree and let it dry during the months after Christmas. Have someone neatly slice the piece of tree to make ornaments. What a perfect way to commemorate each year of a child's life or a marriage by having slices of each Christmas tree and making an ornament for each year from the actual tree the family celebrates the home holiday with. Beautiful, rustic and meaningful!

Wood slices are so versatile and forgiving if you make a mistake. You can always change the design, paint over it, scrape it off, slice it again (possibly), and flip it over to get what you want on the slice. You could even glue one on top of another for a different effect or to cover up mistakes.

These look adorable. Since we've had a warm winter, I don't think anyone will notice if I "borrow" a piece of fire wood. I wonder how these would do with a coat of Modge Podge to seal? I think I'd like to add a bit of gold glitter too. Just as an accent or maybe around the edges. Or even some greenery and berries.
