Ruffled Christmas Bag

Looking for fun and unexpected Christmas crafts to make? Create a Ruffled Christmas Bag from Carlene Eshelman and give one to your most stylish friend. Use a sewing machine, lace and ruffled fabric to create this fabulous winter accessory.

Ruffled Christmas Bag

Materials:

  • 1/4” ribbon
  • 3 pieces of 5”x28” lace
  • 14” X 33” muslin
  • 3” X 42” muslin
  • Sewing machine
  • Sewing pins

Instructions:

  1. Fold 14” X 33” muslin in half so right sides face each other, and wrong sides are on the outside. Fold one edge 1” down, then fold 1/4” in to cover raw edge. Pin with sewing pins.

  2. Repeat for the other top edge.

  3. Sew a straight stitch and remove pins.

  4. Take 1/4” ribbon and place in top holes of your lace to form a gather. Do this for all 3 lace pieces.

  5. Face muslin from step 1, face up. Pin one lace piece to top of muslin(where you have sewn a straight stitch). Adjust gathers to fit across your muslin piece.

  6. Place second lace piece below first lace, and pin about 1” from bottom of first lace so they will overlap. Adjust gathers.
  7. Repeat for third lace piece.

  8. Stitch lace pieces in place with a straight stitch.

  9. Fold muslin piece in half so right sides are together. Adjust so lace does not stick out from sides and pin down.

  10. Straight stitch the sides of the muslin to create the bag.

  11. Take 3” X 42” muslin and face wrong side down on table. Fold 1/3 in. Fold 1/4” in on other side, then, fold over your first fold. This will cover the raw edge. Pin to secure.

  12. Sew a straight stitch in middle of muslin from step 10.

  13. Pin to inside of bag at side seams. Adjust length of strap to your desire.

  14. Sew a rectangle over straps to secure to purse.

  15. Trim any excess fabric from strap.

What girl or lady for that matter does not want a pretty purse to carry around for the holidays? I know I love getting new things, but I also have a select few items that I pack up each year and only use when it gets cold. I bet this will turn into one of my favorites.

This little ruffled Christmas is so cute to take to a party or when you do not want to carry that big bag. It can be used all year. I would problary make my ruffles a little different to speed up the sewing process. You can buy this large lace pre-gathered or buy it ungathered and gather by sewing large stitch across the top and pulling thread to size you need. I can see these given as gifts for family and friends also. Make some in different colors to match your outfits. A very fun bag and the tutorial and video make it an easy project.
