Nothing says Christmas in July quite like the Santa Holidaying in Hawaii Tutorial. This wonderful Santa Claus craft idea features Santa with a Hawaiian lei, swim trunks, and sunglasses, in full vacation mode.

From the designer: "Santa is a busy man. He has so many gifts to prepare and millions of children to keep happy. But even Santa needs a holiday! This July he has decided to go and relax in Hawaii, and to reload his batteries while trying his hand at surfing. Looks like he is having a lot of fun, isnt it?"

Materials List

  • 6.4” high plastic toy doll, if possible one wearing a jumpsuit
  • White cotton filling
  • Dark blue crepe paper
  • Piece of red felt for the hat
  • Piece of white felt for the hat
  • 0.6” high silver bell
  • Small piece of x-ray film
  • A6 sized piece of green glitter foam sheet
  • A6 sized piece of stiff cardstock
  • Needle
  • Dark blue; red and white thread
  • Neon green glitter glue
  • Quick-drying craft glue (such as bostik clear)
  • Super glue
  • Standard scissors
  • Pencil

Instructions:

For the doll:

  1. Undress the doll, then cut off all the doll’s hair ~ try and cut the hair as close as possible to the scalp.

  2. Use cotton filling and glue to add hair to the doll’s head. Use the scissors to shape the hair neatly.

  3. Roll a small piece of filling between your fingers and cut it to shape to add an eyebrow. Repeat for the second eyebrow, and make the moustache in the same way.

  4. Use the cotton filling to add a beard, again shaping it with the scissors.

  5. Now Santa needs to get a pot belly ~ he is on vacation and had too much pizza, remember! Glue some cotton filling to his stomach, and add some padding to his backside too.

  6. Cut the jumpsuit into swimming shorts. Use a running stitch to add a seam to the bottom of each leg. Also use a running stitch to add a seam to the top of the shorts. Pull the shorts onto the doll and gather the top of the shorts around the doll’s body. Make sure that all the cotton filling is hidden before ending the running stitch with a secure knot.

  7. Now make the Hawaiian lei around his neck. Cut 1” sized squares from the dark blue crepe paper. Take a square and crumple it up. Using the needle and a double strand dark blue thread, thread the crumpled square onto the thread. Continue adding more squares until the lei is long enough. Add it around his neck and make a double knot to secure at the back.

Make a felt hat:

  1. Cut the hat from the pattern sheet and trace it onto the red felt. Repeat, so that you will have a front and back panel for the hat. Cut the two panels out.

  2. Use the needle and red thread to stitch the sides of the two panels together.

  3. Cut a strip from the second piece of white felt and glue it all around the bottom of the hat. Use a running stitch to keep the white felt strip in place.

  4. Use needle and thread to affix the bell to the end of the hat.

  5. Glue the hat on the doll’s head.

Make the other accessories:

  1. Use the pencil to draw sunglasses on the piece of X-ray film and cut them out. Add a border with the green glitter glue and allow to dry. Once dry, glue the glasses on the doll’s face.

  2. Glue the foam sheet on the cardstock and allow to dry. Cut out a surfboard from the foam sheet/cardstock combo.

  3. Use the Super Glue to glue the doll to the surfboard – and voila! Santa is on holiday!

Can Santa take me with him this year? I would love to go to the big island for the holidays. I can see my whole family talking about winning the lottery and flying us all to Hawaii to enjoy Christmas and New Years. Maybe this Hawaiian Santa will bring me good luck.
